Blow Out Kits for Y-Strainers: What They Are and How They Work

Do you ever find it too time consuming or frustrating when it’s time to either clean out a y-strainer or clear out a clog? What if we told you there is a simple solution that makes cleaning out your strainer quick and easy? With a blowout kit installed, your y-strainer maintenance is as easy as turning a lever.

What Is a Y-Strainer?

Stainless steel y-strainer with mesh filterA Y-Strainer is a device used in piping systems to filter particles and debris out of the media and prevent blockages or damage to components downstream like pumps, valves, and meters. The “Y” shape that gives it its name is a simple yet effective design that allows media to flow smoothly while collecting debris in the lower compartment.

Key Functions of Y-Strainers:

  • Particle Removal: Filters out solids from liquids or gasses.
  • Equipment Protection: Prevents damage to sensitive components.
  • System Efficiency: Maintains optimal flow rates and pressure.

Y-Strainers are great at trapping debris, but they require regular cleaning to function correctly. This usually means shutting down the system, disassembling the strainer, and manually cleaning the screen. The whole process leads to a lot of downtime and increased labor costs. Installing a blow-out kit on your y-strainer makes cleaning quicker and easier, completing the job in a fraction of the time.

What Is a Blow Out Kit for Y-Strainers?

Y Strainer blowout kit componentsA Blow Out Kit makes a connection between your y-strainer and a blowout valve (which can be either a manual ball valve or electric ball valve). This setup allows you to quickly flush out the trapped particulates from your y-strainer without having to disassemble it or remove it from the line. The blow-out kit can be installed easily by replacing the standard end cap of a y-strainer. A blow out valve on the Y-Strainer makes it so that you can clean the system quickly, keeping it running without the need for costly shutdowns.

Components of a Blow Out Kit

A typical blow out kit includes the following components:

  • End Cap with NPT Port: Replaces the standard Y-Strainer end cap, providing a connection point for the plug or hex nipple.
  • NPT End Cap Plug: Seals the end cap when the flushing function is not in use.
  • Male to Male NPT Hex Nipple: Provides the threaded connection needed to attach manual or automated valves for flushing functionality.

How Do Blow Out Kits Work?

Blow Out Kits replace the Y-Strainer’s original end cap with a new one that includes a port. This installation lets you connect the y-strainer to a ball valve that controls the flow of media. When the valve is shut, the media runs through the y-strainer as usual, removing debris from the system. Opening the valve provides a path to flush out the debris that has collected in the strainer’s mesh filter. Alternatively, if no valve is attached, the port can be sealed with the included end cap plug and manually opened for occasional flushing as needed.

Blow Out Kit Installation

  1. Remove the Y-Strainer’s existing end cap.
  2. Replace it with the new end cap provided in the Blow Out Kit.
  3. Attach the male NPT to male NPT hex nipple to the new end cap’s port.
  4. Add a Valve or Plug:
    • Add a Valve: Attach a manual or automated ball valve to the hex nipple.
    • Add a Plug: Seal the port using the kit’s NPT threaded end cap plug if a valve is not immediately needed.

Operation

Flushing the Strainer:

  • With a Valve Attached: Open the attached valve to release trapped particles. The debris is flushed out quickly without interrupting the flow in the main pipeline.
  • Without a Valve Attached: If no valve is installed, you can temporarily remove the NPT end cap plug to manually flush the strainer. Be sure to securely replace the plug once the flushing process is complete.

Y-Strainer Maintenance:

  • With or Without a Valve: Regular blow-outs or manual flushes keep the strainer clean, reducing the need for disassembly and manual cleaning.
  • The system continues to operate efficiently, minimizing wear on equipment.

Benefits of Using Blow Out Kits

1. Reduced Downtime

  • Continuous Operation: Perform maintenance without shutting down the system.
  • Increased Productivity: Keep your processes running smoothly with minimal interruptions.

2. Ease of Maintenance

  • Quick Cleaning: Flush out debris in seconds by simply opening a valve.
  • User-Friendly: Easy to install and operate.

3. Cost Savings

  • Lower Labor Costs: Reduce the time and manpower required for maintenance.
  • Extended Equipment Life: Prevent damage to downstream equipment with a constant clean media flow.

4. Versatility

  • Compatibility: Works with both manual and automated ball valves.
  • Adaptability: Suitable for various Y-Strainer sizes and applications.
